Friends of the Archer Center Trustees leverage their collaborative giving to create impact. The Trust helps educate the next generation of leaders from Texas by providing vital financial support for important initiatives that cannot be funded through our annual operating budget. Trustees commit to contributing or raising a minimum of $500 annually and have direct input as to how their donations are utilized. Each year, Trustees review student support or programmatic initiatives developed by Archer Center staff and alumni and vote on which initiatives to fund. The Trust is an important building block toward sustainable fundraising in support of current and future Archer Fellows and is a unique way for supporters and alumni of the Archer Center to have a significant impact on the Center's future. Ten percent of the total amount raised from annual donations is added to the corpus of the permanent Archer Center Trust Endowment to provide long-term sustainability of the Trust and important future initiatives.

Initiatives Funded by 2019-2020 Trust
Need-Based Scholarships for Archer Fellows - $35,000
This initiative will provide scholarships to Archer Fellows with a significant financial need, including students who are the first in their family to pursue higher education and Pell Grant-eligible students. Oftentimes, these students have some of the most significant financial need as they tend to have little to no monetary support from their families. The stipends will be awarded through a need-based application process and will significantly help alleviate financial strains. Travel to D.C. for Archer Fellows - $15,000
Upon being accepted to the Archer Center’s programs, many students’ initial excitement is replaced by concern about how they will pay for expenses such as airfare to embark on their life-changing experience in the nation’s capital. Funding will provide approximately 45 round-trip flights for Archer Fellows from their home city to Washington, D.C. Travel vouchers will be awarded to students through a need-based application process, allowing students to put the funds they would have spent on travel toward the higher cost of living in D.C. “You have provided me the flight that is going to change my life and will allow me to show the pride of Texas to world.” -- Archer Fellow recipient of a 2018-19 Archer Center Trust Travel Scholarship D.C. Metro U-Pass Program - $15,000
On average, Archer Fellows spend $250 per month on local subway/bus transportation to their internships and classes at the Archer Center. This is a substantial increase from transportation costs during a typical semester on campus. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) U-Pass Program benefits colleges and universities in the D.C. area by providing unlimited riding privileges on Metrobus and Metrorail at a substantially discounted price. At about $1 per student per day, the U-Pass offers an affordable transportation option for students. Funding this initiative will provide each Archer Fellow in fall, spring and summer with a U-Pass while in D.C. This will also significantly aid in recruitment efforts given the cost savings this represents to future Fellows. Alumni Scholarships to Pursue Graduate Degrees and Public Service Fellowships - $6,000
From Harvard Law School to Oxford and Teach for America to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, Archer Fellow alumni enroll in prestigious graduate schools and participate in elite public service programs domestically and abroad. This initiative will provide six $1,000 scholarships to Archer Fellow alumni pursuing graduate degrees and public service fellowships to help make their dreams a reality. These scholarships will be awarded through an application process managed by the Archer Fellow Alumni Association and will significantly aid the Archer Center in alumni relations efforts. Educational and Cultural Experiences - $5,000
Throughout the semester, Archer Fellows study the historically significant sites of the nation’s capital. But just outside Washington’s city limits are sites of equal importance in the country’s history and founding. This initiative will provide an enriching educational experience for undergraduate Archer Fellows by enabling each class to visit Monticello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Funding this initiative will also provide additional educational and cultural opportunities for Archer Fellows each semester in D.C. Staff in Residence at Archer Fellow Housing (Partially Funded)
The Archer Fellowship Program is a living-learning program (LLP), which the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AACU) describes as “residential housing programs that incorporate academically based themes and build community through common learning.” This subsidy would defray the annual cost of housing for an individual to serve as a resident advisor to the Archer Fellows residing in Station House near Capitol Hill. As is standard on a university campus, the resident advisor would help foster the fellowship experience, mediate conflicts, and provide additional support for students, particularly those who may experience challenges adjusting to the D.C. experience. |
