The Archer Fellowship Program
"My semester in Washington, D.C., was an invaluable opportunity to experience policymaking firsthand, learn from leaders in public service, and build lasting friendships. Even as a graduate, the Archer Fellowship Program continues to impact my career and personal life through the intelligent and passionate individuals I have met in the Archer Fellow alumni network." Casey Sublett Menchaca Spring 2016 Archer Fellow President, Archer Fellow Alumni Association |
Internship
Archer Fellows intern full-time with an organization of their choosing based on their own professional and academic goals and interests. Previous Archer Fellows have interned with a vast array of organizations such as the United Nations Information Center, the Supreme Court, the U.S. Department of State, offices within the White House and on Capitol Hill, and various non-profit organizations. Students selected for the Archer Fellowship Program are responsible for securing their own internship, but receive one-on-one support from an Archer Center staff member throughout the search process.
Scholarship
Archer Fellows remain enrolled in their home institution and earn 15 hours of in-residence credit for their experience in D.C. In addition to receiving credit for the full-time internship, students take classes focused on policy, history, and advocacy from UT faculty members. Fellows will connect their internship experience to the classroom as well as explore the many monuments and museums of the nation's capital. Fellowship
Students who participate in the Archer Fellowship Program can expect to have a challenging yet rewarding experience that will enable them to grow both personally and professionally. Archer Fellows live together in apartments just blocks from Union Station through a partnership with Washington Intern Housing Network (WIHN). Housing is fully furnished and conveniently located near the city's public transportation. The Archer Fellowship Program gives students a sense of direction and the tools necessary to launch their respective careers. Archer Fellows make and maintain social and professional contacts that can help lead to continued internship opportunities and jobs post-graduation. The Archer Center's support network is large, including a constantly growing alumni base with core groups in Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, Los Angeles, the Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and New York City. The Archer Fellowship Program was established by The University of Texas System in conjunction with former U.S. Representative Bill Archer as a way to bring highly motivated and accomplished students to Washington, D.C., for a comprehensive academic and professional experience. Selection is based on a competitive application process, and each cohort of Archer Fellows is comprised of the some of the best and brightest students from across the UT System.
