Q & A with James
Please tell us about your current position.
I lead strategy development, competitive pricing analysis, and support of full scale Price To Win project engagements with client’s executive leadership. This includes competitive intelligence data collection, data synthesis, model building and testing, and development of win strategy recommendations.
Please tell us more about your Archer Fellowship Program internship.
During my internship I was responsible for providing timely, in-depth analysis on the critical issues at the cross-section of the Department of Defense and its industrial base. With a focus on defense acquisition trends, technological innovation, and ongoing reform efforts, we monitored important developments in the global defense industry.
Contributing Author on reports in the following areas:
- Long-term effects of Sequestration and Military Drawdowns on the Defense Industrial Base
- Army Modernization - Non-Kinetic Electronic Warfare Capability
- Overview of Contingency and Crisis Contracting Methods and their outcomes
- Export Control Regulations of Defense-Related Products with Canada
What has been your general career path?
My career path has been based on three core values: the ability to learn, teach and empower. I had opportunities in D.C., but I chose to take on a position with Lone Star Analysis after graduation and have stayed there since. It was an easy choice as here I am provided an opportunity to lead projects, engage directly with client’s leadership and constantly be working on new innovative technology.
How has your experience as an Archer Fellow influenced your career path and goals?
My experience taught me that nothing can replace my core values that I look for in a career. I learned that people can get caught up in titles, corporate ladders, and the ability to be working in proximity to those in power. My experience taught me to find a career where you can make an impact. A place where you are passionate about the work and for me, a place I could learn something new, teach others and empower individuals daily.
What did you value the most about your Archer Fellowship Program experience?
I am most thankful for the lessons in communication. From the Archer Fellowship Program, I not only learned how to better communicate on an interpersonal level, but also as a working professional. I cannot begin to express how much the ability to communicate efficiently and effectively plays in our lives. The Archer Fellowship Program taught me how to listen to others, express my viewpoint effectively and how to present and debate in a professional setting. I was never the smartest person in the room, but through the experience provided to me, I was taught how to be heard in any room.
What do you value the most about being an alumnus?
The opportunity to give back. More specifically, to give back to the current Archer Fellows and those aspiring to be in the program. As an Alumni of the program and having already reaped the benefits the Archer Center provides, I feel this is my opportunity to give back the advice and mentorship I received or wished I would have received at the time. I was honored to be a part of this program and while I am looking forward to being able to share my experience, I truly care about being able to enhance the experience of future Archer Fellows.
What is your favorite memory as an Archer Fellow?
My favorite Archer Fellowship memory is easily being able in the city during an inauguration. Regardless of the political beliefs you hold, I would highly recommend anyone to attend if they have the chance to be in D.C. during an inauguration to attend. It is incredible to see the entire city involved in one event and witnessing the transition of power in the leadership of our nation is an experience not to be forgotten.
