Archer Fellows in the City
Tuesday, December 10, 2024

For an Archer Fellow, a semester in Washington, D.C., is more than just policy and politics—it’s a unique opportunity to explore the city’s vibrant culture and history, sample iconic cuisine, and go on an adventure or two. Discover how the Archer Center’s signature events make a semester in the nation’s capital so special.

Ben’s Chili Bowl
A cherished Archer Center tradition includes visiting Ben’s Chili Bowl, a historic institution offering Archer Fellows a taste of D.C.’s culinary heritage. During their visit, Archer Fellows learn about the beloved restaurant and its history in the U Street neighborhood. Occasionally, cohorts even have the opportunity to meet and pose for pictures with Virginia Ali, the co-founder who, alongside her husband, Ben, opened the restaurant in 1958.

Neighborhood Walks
Washington, D.C., a city with over 130 neighborhoods and eight district wards, can often feel intimidating to its newest residents. To help the Fellows settle into their new city, Archer Center staff members organize neighborhood walking tours.

"Washington, D.C., is a patchwork of diverse neighborhoods and unique communities," said Archer Center staff member Sara Ulanoski. "The walks are a great opportunity for Archer Fellows to immerse themselves in the city and become more like locals."

Past walks have highlighted historic neighborhoods, including Adams Morgan and Logan Circle. Staff members even hosted a Halloween-themed Historic Downtown Ghost Tour in 2024, weaving tales of haunted landmarks like the White House and Constitution Avenue into a fun (and spooky!) evening.

An Evening at the Kennedy Center or Ford's Theatre
A semester in Washington would not be complete without taking in the arts. As part of their D.C. experience, Archer Fellows attend a play or musical at one of the city’s performance centers, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Ford’s Theatre. The experience is woven into their curriculum, allowing Archer Fellows to explore the connections between art and democracy in class discussions. Past performances include the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, 1776, and Hamilton.

Private Tours of D.C. Iconic Landmarks
Thanks to the Archer Center's connections and strong alumni network, Fellows are regularly treated to private tours of notable landmarks such as the White House, U.S. Capitol, and Library of Congress.

Fall 2024 Archer Fellow-Led Activities
We’d be remiss not to highlight the many adventures our Archer Fellows organize on their own. Whether a trip to New York City or a long hike at a nearby national park, our Archer Fellows find plenty of ways to stay busy. Here are some of this year's highlights, courtesy of the fall 2024 cohort.

Hiking in Shenandoah National Park
A group of Fall 2024 Archer Fellows headed for the scenic trails of Shenandoah National Park for a hiking trip. Located just 75 miles from Washington, D.C., Shenandoah National Park is a popular destination for Archer Fellows looking to explore the great outdoors.

"The hike included some tough rock scrambles, which required a lot of teamwork and problem-solving," shared Fall 2024 Archer Fellow Giana Abraham. "The experience reminded me of my time in the Archer Fellowship, where we also had to lean on each other through challenges. In both settings, I really learned the value of collaboration, especially when facing tough obstacles."

Bishop Events DC Turkey Trot
Members of the fall 2024 cohort took part in the Bishop Events DC Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. Archer Fellows laced up their sneakers and joined the community in this annual event, which supports local and national charity organizations.

By providing signature events and encouraging students to engage with all D.C. has to offer, Archer Fellows leave our nation's capital with memories that will last a lifetime.
