Archer Fellows Fall 2006

Stephanie Cardwell – UT Austin

Stephanie Cardwell is a junior from The University of Texas at Austin, double-majoring in Biology-Ecology, Evolution & Behavior and Accounting with a minor in Government. She is a 2004 Terry Scholarship Recipient and is in the Bridging Disciplines Program’s Ethics and Leadership Strand. In Austin, she has been active in the teaching teams preceptor program, the Distinguished Speakers Committee and the mentor program in the Terry Scholar Student Association (TSSA). While in Washington, Stephanie will intern at Senate Majority Leader Frist’s Office (R-Tenn.) and at the AAAS Program on Scientific Freedom, Responsibility, and Law.

Arain Carrera – UT El Paso

Arain Carrera is a junior at the University of Texas at El Paso. He is majoring in Political Science and will minor in Economics. Arain is very active in his home town, putting together many projects for the betterment of his community. Mr. Carrera recently completed an internship with The Honorable Congressmen Silvestre Reyes and this semester in Washington, Arain secured an internship through the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) with an economist at the US Department of Agriculture, where he will study the loss and gain of international trade.  In his free time Arain enjoys working out at the gym or jogging at the park.

Lelia Gowland – UT Dallas

Lelia is a McDermott Scholar pursuing a degree in Sociology with a minor in Government and politics at the University of Texas at Dallas. During her tenure as President of the University Democrats at UTD, she founded an annual safe sex event on campus and sponsored a hurricane benefit concert to aid her beloved hometown of New Orleans. Lelia has also served as board member for the Dallas chapter of the Gay, Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN) since her Freshman year and was an active member of the university's chapter of the National Organization for Women. In DC, she will be working for NARAL Pro-Choice America promoting access to contraceptives, sex education, and abortion rights.

Juliane Halverson – UT Tyler

Juliane is a senior from the University of Texas at Tyler, majoring in Criminal Justice with a minor in psychology. She is a member of Alpha Chi, the National College Honor Scholarship Society, Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society, and received recognition in the American Southwest Conference All-Academic Honor Roll. She participates in the UT Tyler women’s cross country team and is a past member of the women’s basketball team. While in D.C. she will be interning in the communications office of the Department of Justice.

Daniel Honker – UT Austin

Daniel Honker is a senior from The University of Texas at Austin and will graduate next spring as a Government major and Communication Studies minor. While at UT, he has been an active member of Habitat for Humanity and Gamma Beta Phi Honor & Service Society. Daniel has worked on the local and state levels of government and looks forward to seeing the public policymaking process on the federal level. As an Archer Fellow, he will spend his semester interning at the Federal Government Affairs office of Marathon Oil. After graduation, Daniel hopes to earn a degree in public affairs or public administration and pursue a career in public service.

George Lake- UT Tyler

George Lake is a junior from the University of Texas at Tyler, majoring in Political Science with a minor in pre-law.  While at UT Tyler, George devoted his time to leading the College Democrats, serving as president before coming to D.C.  George is an active member in the Pi Sigma Alpha political science honors society, the Pre-law society and supports the Amnesty International group on campus.  While in D.C., George will be interning with John Edward’s PAC, One America Committee, gaining insight into the strategy and execution of a high stakes presidential campaign.

Andrew Lara – UT Austin

Andrew Lara is a Government and English senior with a concentration in Ethics and Leadership at The University of Texas at Austin.  An active member of the student body, Andrew participates in multiple student organizations, is involved in the community and is a recent recipient of the Texas Exes Presidential Leadership Award.  As a Rapoport Scholar, Andrew is an advocate for the underprivileged spending his free time empowering others through service. 

Bryan W. Law - UT Austin

Bryan W. Law attends the University of Texas at Austin.  This fall, Bryan will graduate with a Bachelors degree in Government and a minor in Russian and East European Studies. Bryan is an avid reader and enjoys fishing and playing tennis. In Washington, Bryan hopes to build upon his previous experience as a UT Baptist Student Ministry President and intern for Texas House Speaker Tom Craddick while working for Congressman Lamar Smith. Bryan hopes this internship will help him in his future as he hopes to pursue a career of public service based upon faith, servant leadership, hard work and a love for his country and native Texas.

Oren Lund – UT Dallas

Oren Lund is a senior at the University of Texas at Dallas where he has maintained a perfect GPA while majoring in American Studies.  During his time at UTD, Oren has worked closely with Dr. Anthony Champagne, a favorite professor among many students.  He has also enjoyed collaborating on research with Dr. Edward Harpham, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education at UT Dallas and State Representative Brian McCall.  Before attending UTD, Oren graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York and worked in some of the most prestigious restaurants in the country.  As an Archer Fellow, Oren will be serving as a Judicial Intern for the Supreme Court in the Office of the Administrative Assistant to the Chief Justice.

Rachel Markowitz – UT Dallas

Eugene McDermott Scholar and National Merit Scholar Rachel Markowitz has taken advantage of many interesting opportunities at the University of Texas at Dallas over the past two years, including working in the UTD President’s office as a Student Ambassador, playing on the Ultimate Frisbee team and studying abroad in Thailand, Mexico and Morocco.  Majoring in Government and Politics with a focus on global policy, this Kansas City native also finds time to participate in pre-law activities and volunteer with various projects in Dallas schools.  This fall, Rachel will be interning with the House Committee on International Relations on the subcommittee for terrorism and nonproliferation.

Angelica M. Martinez – UT Brownsville

Angelica M. Martinez is a graduating senior from The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, majoring in English Language Arts and Reading. During her time at UTB-TSC, Angelica has worked diligently to become successful and well equipped for her career as an educator.  She has received state and national recognition through STARS (South Texas Academic Rising Scholars) and was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, an International Honor Society for students seeking teacher certification. While in Washington, Angelica will be interning at the Hispanic Council for Reform and Educational Opportunities, whose mission is to improve educational outcomes for Hispanic children by empowering families through parental choice in education.

Marissa Mendoza – UT Permian Basin

Marissa Mendoza is a senior at the University of Texas at Permian Basin, double majoring in Political Science and Leadership Studies. During her time at UTPB, Marissa devoted much of her energy to campus government. She served as a sophomore senator and was elected secretary of the executive board of the student senate, where she also chaired the public affairs committee. Marissa was also voted outstanding student leader of the year and first runner up for outstanding student senator. While in Washington, Marissa will be interning at the National Council of La Raza’s Center for Emerging Latino Leadership.

Susham M. Modi – UT Arlington

Susham M. Modi is a graduating senior at the University of Texas at Arlington majoring in Political Science with a focus in International Relations and a minor in Criminal Justice. He is a member of the Alpha Chi Honorary Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars and National Dean’s List. Susham was the first undergraduate President and Competitor of the 13th Annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court competition and has served as both President and Competitor for the American Collegiate Moot Court Association at UTA.   He plans to attend law school and has spent the past year working & learning at Martin-Mason-& Stutz in Dallas as a legal assistant/clerk.  This fall, Susham will be interning with Senior Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, helping create the Senator’s comments on current policy issues.

Inga Myronova – UT Arlington

Inga Myronova is a graduating senior from The University of Texas at Arlington, majoring in Political Science. While at UTA, Inga devoted much of her time to serving as the president of the Russian Culture Society. This fall, Inga will be interning at The US – Ukraine Foundation in Washington, D.C., helping to facilitate democratic development, encourage free market reform, and enhance human rights in Ukraine.

David Nibert – UT Austin

David is a senior at The University of Texas at Austin majoring in Government. He has conducted a number of undergraduate research projects at The University including a project on the Electoral College and a study of GE in Indonesia. He studied abroad in Beijing, China where he had the opportunity to appear live on Chinese TV to discuss Sino-American relations and offer his perspective in a foreign policy debate. In D.C. David will be interning in the office of U.S. Senator John Kerry.

Yvette Owo – UT Austin

Yvette Owo is a graduating senior from The University of Texas at Austin, double majoring in Government and Management and pursuing an interdisciplinary minor in Politics, Law, and Social Justice.  Yvette has been a member of Orange Jackets, secretary of Mortar Board Senior Honor Society, a writer for the Daily Texan, a bilingual mentor, a member of African Student Association’s dance team, is the founder and vice president of Business Transfer Student Association and has served as co-director of Students for Equity and Diversity.  She has also worked in the Subcommittee for Higher Education in the Texas Senate and a litigation firm.  Yvette is passionate about civil rights, increasing diversity, and creating equal opportunity. 

Amanda Poplawsky – UT San Antonio

Amanda is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Anthropology at The University of Texas at San Antonio. She works as a research assistant at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio and spends time volunteering with the United Nations Refugee Resettlement Services. In that capacity, she provides helpful services such as English courses, acculturation exercises and apartment set-up for refugees resettling in Texas.

Mario Sanchez – UT Austin

Mario Sanchez is a graduating senior from the University of Texas at Austin. He is double majoring in Economics and Mechanical Engineering. Last year, Mario served as the engineering representative in Student Government and was an active member of the University of Texas Solar Vehicles Team. He has also been active in the Student Union were he was the Internal Affairs officer for the Mexican American Culture Committee and a member of the Distinguished Speakers Committee. While in Washington, Mario will be interning in the Domestic Policy department at the Center for American Progress.

Caleb Saenz – UT San Antonio

Caleb Saenz is a senior honors student at The University of Texas at San Antonio.  Double-majoring in English and Political Science, Caleb has devoted much of his energies to expanding student interest in politics. He served as co-founder and Vice Chairman of Movement for the Future, an organization that brings speakers and activities to the UTSA campus in an effort to increase political dialogue.  While in D.C., Caleb will be working to gain a greater understanding of journalism and its position in politics.

Bret Schenewerk – UT Austin

Bret Schenewerk is a senior from The University of Texas at Austin, triple-majoring in Economics, Government and History. During his time at UT, Bret has been extensively involved in state-level political campaigns and offices, and has volunteered on a variety of projects with the University Democrats.  In 2005, he contributed to Dr. Sean Theriault’s work on party polarization by researching the correlation between changes in House Rules and inter-party relations. While in Washington, Bret will be interning at Global Trade Watch, a division of Public Citizen.

Dmitri Shneider – UT Dallas

Dmitri Shneider is a senior at The University of Texas at Dallas, majoring in Finance with a minor in Economics. Dmitri is an International Chess Master, a two-time Pan-American Gold medalist and the 2003 Samford Fellow. Currently, Dmitri is the founder and President of BGS Chess, an organization that provides chess educational services to children in the North Texas area.  He is also very involved in UTD life, having served as senator in the Student Government and as VP of Recruitment in the Financial Management Association. While in Washington, Dmitri will be interning at the Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs.

Benedict Voit – UT Dallas

Speeding into his third year at the University of Texas at Dallas, Benedict Voit is a Government and Politics major looking to minor in Computer Science. He is a former editor of A Modest Proposal, the alternative student newspaper on campus, a Student Ambassador, part of the Destination Imagination Team, a Student Government Senator, representative of the University in Model United Nations, a Quiz Bowl member, in the CV honors program, and a familiar face in intramural sports. This fall, Benedict will be interning with the political office of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, where he will be watching media markets to help advance Republican Senatorial bids for the mid-term elections.

David Zamora – UT Pan American

David Zamora is a senior at the University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg, Texas.  He is studying Political Science, Economics and History and plans to attend graduate school and law school in the near future.   He is a member of the Political Science Association, History Club, Pre-law Society and the Young Economist Club.  David has also served as a volunteer for the Red Cross, Salvation Army and the Student Services department at Pan Am.  During his semester in Washington, David will spend the fall interning at the FBI.
