Heather Brown, UT El Paso

Political Science & Philosophy, May 2004

Heather is pursuing a degree in political science and philosophy from the University of Texas at El Paso. In addition to her coursework, Heather has served as an AmeriCorps volunteer, serving as a mentor and tutor for youth and creating newsletters for local non-profit organizations. She is a Dean's List and Honors Program students and has been awarded a Rotary Club Scholarship. She is part of the innovative pre-law group at UTEP and hopes to attend law school upon graduation.

Sarah Byeseda, UT Austin

Government with a minor in Pre-Med, May 2003

Sarah is senior in Government and is a part of the Liberal Arts Honors Program at the University of Texas at Austin. She is part of the new Bridging Disciplines Program, is completing her pre-medical requirements, and hopes to go to medical school once she has graduated. Sarah has interned and volunteered with Kids Exchange, American Red Cross, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and Herman Children's Hospital. Sarah is particularly interested in the intersection between medicine and the government and will spend her time in Washington interning with the FDA.

Erin Dougherty, UT Dallas

Literary Studies, May 2003

In addition to her studies at the University of Texas at Dallas, Erin has been an extremely active member of student life. She has served as the homecoming co-chair, the president, education chair, and publicity and finance chair for the UTD Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, and as the musical performances chair on the Student Union Activities Advisory Board. She has been recognized as the Student Leader of the Year and in Who's Who Among American College and University Students. As she has developed an intense interest in the environment and organizational recycling programs, she is interning with the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive in the White House.

Ken Dykes, UT Austin

Radio-Television-Film, May 2003

Ken is specializing in Convergent Media with a concentration in Computer Science. He has used his education and training in the community to establish the Texas New Media Association, which works with youth to get them acclimated to using computers and encourages them to post their creative work on the Web. In addition, Ken has gained professional experience in interactive marketing, videography, and client management. While in Washington, Ken is interning with the media consultancy 18th Street Media.

Tim Hise, UT Dallas

Interdisciplinary Studies, May 2005

Tim is concentrating in math and has aspirations of being a middle school teacher one day. He is part of the inaugural class of McDermott Scholars at the University of Texas at Dallas, having been chosen for his academic achievement, leadership, and devotion to the community. While at UTD, he has maintained a perfect GPA while becoming involved on campus with the homecoming committee and campus ambassadors and in the community as a tutor and mentor at Richardson North Junior High and Franklin Middle School. Over the summer, Tim interned with the Dallas Independent School District; while in Washington, he is interning with the Department of Education.

Chris Martin, UT Austin

Government & History, May 2003

Over the course of Chris' academic career with the University of Texas, he has been the recipient of many honors, including the Hinton Endowed Presidential Scholarship and the Liberal Arts Scholarship; he has been named to the Dean's List and is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta, and Phi Eta Sigma; and he participated in the Liberal Arts Freshman Honors Program. Chris has served as a counselor at Camp Crucis as well as a Senate Messenger in the Texas State Senate during the 2001 session. While in Washington, Chris is interning with Congressman Lloyd Doggett.

Melissa Sellers, UT Austin

Journalism, May 2004

Melissa has been active in the political process on a local level in the State of Texas. She managed the Celeste Caballero Campaign, Miss Latina USA and the Kris Gillespie Campaign for Texas House of Representatives. She has also interned with the John Cornyn for US Senate campaign and the Bush/Cheney 2000 campaign. In addition, Melissa has volunteered with community efforts to support American troops abroad. As an Archer Fellow, Melissa is interning with the Office of Presidential Correspondence in the White House.

Jonathan Skates, UT Austin

Government, May 2003

Jonathan has majored in government with a focus in international government and sociology. He has served as a tutor. Jonathan has been involved as a research assistant in the Government Department to Professor Sean Thierault and his project "Lawmaking in the Modern Congress." Upon graduation, Jonathan is interested in putting to use his education in international affairs as well as his language ability in either Spanish or Mandarin by studying and working abroad. While in Washington, Jonathan is interning with Congressman Kevin Brady's office.

Carter Tatum, UT Austin

Plan II Honors Program & Corporate Communication, May 2003

Carter has developed an intense interest in the arts and arts management. She has interned with the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art, the American Federation of Arts, and Witherspoon & Associates Public Relations Firm. She has served as a representative for Student Government, on the Blanton Museum Student Advisory Committee, and has participated in the Oxford Summer Program, Tri Delta Sorority, and Texas Spirits. As an Archer Fellow, Carter is interning in the public affairs office of the National Museum of American History.

Emily Verrett, UT Austin

Communication Studies, December 2003

Emily is focusing in political communication and has supplemented her academic experience with professional internships in a variety of places, including Christian-Hubble Media and Communications, the Ann Kitchen Campaign for Re-Election, and the Office of the Attorney General for Texas. She is a member of the Texas Longhorn Marching Band, Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Service Sorority, and the Longhorn Band Student Association. While in Washington, Emily is interning with the Office of the First Lady at the White House.

Sergio Villareal, UT Dallas

Government & Politics, May 2003

Sergio J. Villarreal is a 12 year Navy veteran (4 years active, 8 years reserve). He is a senior at the University of Texas at Dallas graduating in May 2003 with a major in Government and Politics. At 31 years of age, Sergio worked as a youth minister for 5 years before accepting his Archer fellowship to D.C. Sergio's goal is to attain a position in the government working in a defense, national security and/or foreign relations area. He also would like to earn a Naval Officer's Commission sometime in the near future. While in DC, he is interning with the Department of Defense.
