Arturo Barrio, UT El Paso

Economics and Computer Information Systems, May 2002

Arturo Barrio is a senior in economics and computer information systems. He has been serving concurrently as the Chair of The University of Texas System Student Advisory Council and the President of The University of Texas at El Paso Student Government Association. Arturo is very interested in learning about the intricacies of a global organization and is interning with the World Bank.

Christina Crimmins, UT Austin

Print Journalism with a minor in History, May 2002

Christy has worked as a staff member and freelance writer for the Austin-American Statesman. Most recently, she was responsible for a regular column on houses of worship in Austin and has had the opportunity to research and write about churches, synagogues, and mosques in central Texas. She is a member of the Longhorn Band. As she is extremely interested in understanding where history and communication meet, she has gained a position as a PR intern with the National Museum of American History (Smithsonian).

Irma Espino, UT Austin

Economics, May 2002

Irma has been an active member in both the Economics Association and the Economics Honors Society. In these activities, Irma has the opportunity to bring the classroom into a new forum for discussion and participation. During the summer of 2001, Irma interned with the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs. This internship has also given her a unique perspective on government as an entity working directly with citizens to identify and solve problems. Irma will be serving as a research and policy intern with the National Organization for Women.

Andrea Guidry, UT Austin

Communication Studies & Psychology, May 2003

Andrea has served as a senate messenger and as a senate journal clerk assistant in the Texas State Senate. She is a Terry Scholar and a volunteer with the Zavala HOSTS program. She is interested in pursuing graduate work in psychology. Her internship with the American Psychological Association allows her to see the discipline in practice. Her duties include attending congressional briefings, writing reports, and helping to organize a conference on women's mental health.

Alex Hammond, UT Austin

Government & History, May 2003

Alex has been highly involved with the Student Endowed Centennial Lectureship which is a program recently revived to bring speakers of nationwide caliber to the UT campus to speak with students. He spent the summer of 2001 at the Yale University Summer Government Scholar Program. Alex is a White House Intern with the Office of Political Affairs rotating through administrative and staff duties.

Patrick Hendrix, UT Austin

Economics and Government with minors in Spanish and Computer Science, May 2002

Patrick is an active member of the Texas Exes Student Chapter, working with the committees that present the OU Torchlight Parade and Hex Rally for the last four years. He is also a member of the UT Tennis Club and was instrumental in bringing the club back from probation to status as outstanding athletic club. He is interested in international trade issues and is interning with the United Nations Information Center.

Heather Jinkins, UT Austin

Journalism, May 2003

In the past, Heather has interned with the Texas House of Representatives as a policy intern and as a press intern with the Office of Governor George Bush. During the summer of 2001, Heather spent her time in D.C. interning with the Office of the First Lady. Heather is interested in gaining more hands-on experience with the day-to-day workings of a print periodical and is interning with Damon Chappie at Roll Call.

Karen Kersey, UT Austin

Spanish & Social Work, December 2001

Karen has served as the Children's Program Coordinator Intern with Catholic Charities, Brady Center, of Dallas and has worked as an activist with the Social Work Welfare Alliance. Additionally, she has also worked as an intern with Drug Prevention Resources of Irving. Bringing her extensive knowledge of Hispanic community issues, Karen is interning with the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) and will be responsible for policy research and presentation.

Margie Montes, UT El Paso

Electronic Media, May 2003

Margie is extremely active with KTEP, the El Paso affiliate of National Public Radio housed at The University of Texas at El Paso. She has worked as an On-Air Talent/Personality and has had the opportunity to do myriad behind-the-scenes work to understand how programs are created and communicated. She participated in the National Association of Hispanic Journalists-Student Media Projects Summer Conference. Margie is interning with National Public Radio Headquarters.

An-Chi Pho, UT Austin

Radio-Television-Film & Public Relations, May 2003

As a programming assistant with KLRU, the PBS affiliate with The University of Texas at Austin, An-Chi has had the opportunity to learn about the creation and implementation of a television program and specifically how a publicly funded entity works. Additionally, An-Chi was a resident assistant in Littlefield Hall and was responsible for programming, discipline, and troubleshooting for a group of freshmen women. An-Chi will be using knowledge gained in the classroom and in other PR/promotions internships to serve the White House Initiative for Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Christine Powers, UT Austin

Public Relations, May 2003

Christine is an active pre-law student who has served as president, public relations director, and events director for Beta Alpha Rho Pre- Law Fraternity. She is also a member of the Association for Women in Communications. She was recently named the Gallup Scholar for The University of Texas. She serves the Office of the First Lady as a Projects Intern.
